Okay, now is time for my Breaking Dawn weigh in, for those of you who don’t know; Breaking Dawn is the 4th book in Stephine Meyer’s Twilight Series of which I’m a big fan. I have already blogged about the first 3 books and on my love of Jacob Black, now it finally time for me to voice my opinion on Breaking Dawn.
First of all it took me only 3 days to read the over 700 page book (not really all that impressive, it big text), and I have admit I was a little disappointed, with the book as a whole, I get the ending and I love how she ties up the big plots points of the series. But, if it wasn’t for the fact that I was so invested into all the characters and really wanted to know how it ended for them, I probably wouldn’t have read the book so fast or even finished it.
Lets start with the good parts of the book first, because there were many… (if you haven’t ready the books and hate spoilers, than you should probably stop reading this post, now).
First, I love the fact she splits the book up into 3 mini books (I don’t get it at first but, now I think it was smart of her). Second, I love that she brought my Jacob back (I knew she would, but still, it was a definite high for me). Third, I loved the fact that book 2 was from my Jacob’s perspective, I think it help a lot of those Jacob haters understand him and why he did what he did. Fourth, I love that she didn’t let Jake imprint on just anyone. Fifth, I love that Charlie isn’t so much in the dark anymore. Sixth, I loved the banding together of all the Vampires at the end (I’m a sucker for people coming together to fight the big evil). Lastly, I like that she left the ending open enough for future books.
Now, for the bad, over all this wasn’t Meyer’s best writing, it really felt like she was trying to cram way too much stuff into this last book and half the time I had no clue where she was going and the other time it was too obsessive where she was going. Some parts went too fast and other parts were too slow. And what the hell, was all that talk about her being influence by 3 books for this one, I saw no trace of a Mid Summers Night Dream (I’m a big Shakespeare, in this book other than the magical topical island. I hated, how she had Jacob come into the wedding only to have act like an ass, what was the point of that. And, although I think it was good that Bella got pregnant, I don’t see the point in why Meyer’s made such a big deal to Bella, that everyone would think she was only, getting married because she was pregnant, in previous books; if Meyer was heading, that way in first place, why shine such a bad light on it in the other books. I also, didn’t like how whinny Edward was getting about hurting Bella, I get that he was sad about the baby killing her part, but it was annoying how he reacted to just bruising her. Also, I think it was kind of corny that Bella was like the perfect vampire. I like the fact that she had such control over her bloodlust, and that her power had a name and she was really good a using it. But, she was too good and it went too, well, I would like to see Bella struggle with some part of being a vampire and not being human any more.
Lastly, I hated that she dragged the ending out so freaking long, only to NOT have a finally battle. I went to her book signing (I’m now, I’m the proud owner of an autograph copy of “New Moon”) and she explained why, saying it was because she felt that if there was a battle then she would have had to kill off people she didn’t want to and she knew she wouldn’t be good at describing a really good battle scene with all the fighting. I get that, but really the stand off at the end lasted like 3 1/2 chapters only to end with the badies running away, at least one of the badies could have died or gotten hurt.
So, in the end it’s a really mixed review for me, I think if you have already read all the other books than, this is a must ready, but don’t expect it to be as compelling as the other books. Breaking Dawn, only serves as way for Meyer to make Bella and everyone one else lives perfect. Not that there is anything wrong with a prefect happy ending, it was just a little too prefect. (Oh and by the way, Shephine Meyer’s seems like a really nice person, it was really cool to see so many fans of all ages and to hear her speak about writing the series.)
